The
Challenge
Fundia Nedstaal
B.V., the largest steel rolling mill in the Netherlands, produces
steel rods and drawn wires for the European market. During
the late 1980s, Fundia Nedstaal experienced a significant increase
in demand due to the strong European economy. However by 1991, the
company's batch-oriented data processing system was visibly overwhelmed
by the pace of round-the-clock operations. Reports were 24 to 36
hours out of date by the time they appeared.
What the company urgently needed was a solution that could transform
its struggling information system into a powerful on-line transaction
processing environment.
Committed to providing high volume, on-line transaction applications
based on Sybase RDBMS, Ceecom was chosen by Fundia Nedstaal to ensure
that their world class manufacturing standards would be maintained
and improved.

At the Fundia
Nedstaal installation, the Ceecom Manufacturing System software
has been configured to optimally meet all of Nedstaal's requirements
by fully integrating all aspects of the manufacturing process, including
Shop Floor Control, Inventory, and Bill of Material, onto one central
database.
A fibre optic Ethernet communications configuration runs between
the development and production systems, and throughout the plant.
It connects to over 200 terminals throughout the Nedstaal production
facility. A special interface to bar code readers and spectrometers
has been implemented.
